Contact Lenses for Aging Eyes

Contact lenses are worn by millions of people of all ages.

They are not developed for age categories, elder and young people can wear them according to their vision improvement and care needs.  There are various types of contact lenses, disposable contact lenses, multifocal contact lenses, toric contact lenses for astigmatism or colored contact lenses are only a few from the wide range and categories. Certain vision conditions and deficiencies can be inherited or developing over time, while others are developing with aging. Presbyopia, myopia and astigmatism can come together with aging that is why after consulting with a specialist asking for possibilities, reading glasses or contact lenses for aging eyes is necessary.

To avoid discomfort cause by the continuous wear of two or three reading glasses to correct presbyopia or myopia, older people can newly benefit from the use of prescription multifocal contact lenses. Presbyopia is one of the most annoying parts of the aging, and the majority of people after the age of 60 are suffering from it. There are people who do not want to give up contact lenses or wear eyeglasses as their eyes are aging and the help provided by the new multifocal, gas permeable silicone hydrogel lenses for aging eyes can easily solve the problem. At an advanced age, eyelids can easily lose a lot from their elasticity and muscle tones, dropping more easily on the superior cornea, which can lead to corneal hypoxia. Oxygen amounts getting into the eye are also dropping with aging, which can easily result in oxygen insufficiency in the cornea during eye closure. The use of contact lenses might help in improving these eye conditions. Although the fitting of the contact lens into an aging eye can be more difficult than in younger and healthier eyes it is not impossible; even more, more are wearing contact lenses to improve vision conditions of their aging eyes.

Contact lens wearing might be difficult because of the easier drying of the eye, but with new materials, silicone hydrogel or gas permeable lenses, the oxygen transmission and breathability of the eye is easier. Gas permeable materials are important in the cases of toric lenses or high prescription multifocal lenses, while for the problems caused by lower and weaker eyelids, silicone hydrogel lenses are easier and comfortable to fit and wear.

As you can see there is no age limit for wearing contact lenses. No matter if you are 18 or 80 years old, with proper expert advice and prescription the right contact lenses can be made and found for you.
